Deep-diving into a condensed period of creativity and freedom for the legendary rocker, who died in 2017, the docu will have its world premiere as the centerpiece film of next week’s virtual South by Southwest festival.

Capturing the Wildflowers period of 1993-95, Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free delivers an unvarnished look at Petty and features never-before-seen footage drawn from a newly discovered archive of 16mm film as well as new interviews with album co-producers Rick Rubin and original Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench.

Director Mary Wharton illuminates an artist at the height of his powers, providing an intimate and emotional look at an enigmatic icon with archival footage of Petty in the recording studio, behind the scenes on tour with his band and at home with his family.

Peter Afterman produced Tom Petty: Somewhere You Feel Free, with Dan Braun and Adria Petty serving as executive producers. The 89-minute film screens March 17 at the virtual SXSW.
