When Joan Jett declared “I love rock ‘n’ roll”, she became the guitar heroine to watch – both in terms of her music and her style. Before the Spice Girls, before Annie Lennox, before, ahem, Little Mix, Jett was pushing the boundaries of female liberation. Founding the all-female teenage rock band The Runaways in 1975, when she was still a teenager, Jett pioneered a rebellious image to go with her music, infused with a hard-edged femininity.
